Today, a quiet energy transformation is taking root across several remote hamlets, driven not by large foreign infrastructure firms, but by local women who have trained as micro-grid technicians.
Powering Remote Valleys with Grassroots Solar
The community-owned mini-grids combine roof-mounted solar arrays with lithium battery storage designed to withstand freezing alpine temperatures. By installing decentralised systems in off-grid villages, the initiative provides dependable lighting for evening study, small enterprise workshops, and healthcare centers that previously struggled during grid outages.
Building Local Capability and Economic Freedom
Beyond clean energy, the project focuses heavily on technical education. Over forty women have completed intensive workshops in electrical maintenance and panel installation, forming local response teams capable of servicing their own equipment without waiting for outside contractors.

As neighbouring districts take notice, the model is already expanding toward nearby valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan.
